Jennings-Bey founded SAI in 2015 after studying the concept of behavioral addiction to street violence, culminating in the national publication of his 2014 paper, Street Addiction: A Proposed Theoretical Model for Understanding the Draw of Street Life and Gang Activity in the Journal of Addiction Research and Theory.

Mrs. Salaam Jennings-Bey pursued research in the psychosocial impact of street violence on older adolescents and on their academic performance and received the Ed.D. Degree in 2015. Street Addiction was founded and she partnered to become the COO.
